| Bio: | I've had this diary for Two features of this diary that have become less prominent of late are rubbish jokes and cat pictures, so I have removed them from the profile so as not to disappoint any newcomers. These days I mainly talk about the oddnesses encountered by a newcomer to Rome, the variously amusing things said and done by Italian students of English, and the fact that I am sometimes a bit miserable. Some of it is friends only, but I'm relatively unfussy about adding new friends. All you have to do is ask. Here is the music the internet thinks I like. The internet is largely right. ![]() I also talk in a quiet voice under the name Steve Belizon-Holliday at NOTBBC. Below is the first and only fruit of a since-abandoned project to compose occasional essays about things on my list of interests. It is still here because I haven't thought of anywhere else to put it. Some facts about UK postcodes In case any foreign people read this, a quick word about how UK postcodes (the equivalent of US zipcodes) work. A postcode is made up of one or two letters, then one or two numbers, then another number and two more letters, in the form NN17 9RS or M9 7AA. (There are exceptions to this rule in central London but that's not important right now.) Each postcode prefix (the first letter or letters) is an abbreviation for a town, city or region and covers an area containing anything from a couple of hundred thousand to a couple of million people. Each individual postcode covers a few houses (or, in the case of those quoted above, an industrial estate in Corby or a hospital in Manchester). I have been a big fan of postcodes since I worked for a parcel delivery company during my college holidays. Some time I will try and explain why, but in the meantime here are some fun facts. | |||||
